Planting time for garlic

in the North is

Mid-Oct. to early Nov.

Order now !

Simply separate the cloves and plant each
one with the pointed end up covering them
with about 1 inch of soil.  The optimum
distance between cloves depends on the
size of the expected bulb and will vary,
depending on the expected size of the new
heads, from 4-8 inches.  Cover the area
with at least 4 inches of mulch to moderate
the soil moisture and temperature and keep
the weeds down.  When scapes (flower
stalks) appear, snip or pull them off as they
begin to curl and use them for soups, sauces
or garnishes.  Harvest your garlic (early-late
July) when all but 2-3 leaves are brown.
Save the largest cloves to re-plant to ensure
your stock will remain vigorous.  See our
growing garlic page for more details.
